What’s new in this upgrade from the previous release (v. 3.0.3b).
- adds Australia – 2019
- Editor > Regions > Universal > Basics > General Election > adds Ranked Choice (also called instant-runoff or preferences – in game it is called Instant-Runoff)
- Main Screen > if Ranked Choice is ‘on’ for campaign, option to view as FPP (without instant-runoff), Instant-Runoff or Instant-Runoff 2C (2 candidates)
- computer players now create ads that can be run nationally, instead of just regionally or for specific constituencies
Note that Australia – 2019 will also be released for Prime Minister Infinity – U.K. shortly.
Campaign designers can create new campaigns with Instant-Runoff, but editing voter flow numbers isn’t available in the Editor yet. Instead, those numbers have to be edited in an XML editor using the campaign’s ranked_choice.xml file (automatically generated when you turn Ranked Choice ‘on’ in the editor). Editor capability for editing the numbers will be added soon.
The Australia – 2019 campaign doesn’t have updated issues – that will be done shortly. I wanted to release this as soon as possible as the election is May 18th.
Are you not releasing it for Mac?
Sorry, disregard my post – I’ve just seen that it’s forthcoming!
Will you be releasing PMI UK for Windows and Mac at the same time?
Preferences look really well, One thing I noticed in the Australia 2019 campaign is that there isn’t any endorsers. Overall, great update!
Something that will be most helpful in the election night would be being able to see the results in FPTP. Currently when election night ends it switches to the Instant run off and one can’t see the FPTP vote to compare the difference between the three
@TLK,
Thanks for this – endorsers added, new version now available (3.0.5b).
I agree completely with @theliberalkitten on results. Also PLEASE add this to PI!!! I mean you already have the system in,so can’t be that hard lol! Good job though Anthony.
@TLK,
“Currently when election night ends it switches to the Instant run off and one can’t see the FPTP vote to compare the difference between the three”
Thanks for this – this should be changed for the next update.
@TheMiddlePolitical re adding to PI,
Maybe.
@Shane,
“Will you be releasing PMI UK for Windows and Mac at the same time?”
First will be PMI UK for Windows, then both PMI versions for Mac.
Good luck! Overall, the preferences is a big step forward for campaign designers. Besides the election night thing I mentioned, everything looks really good. Oh and of course being able to edit the voter flow in the editor would make things even better but I;m sure we can all be patient for that.
@TLK, thanks for this feedback!
Just completed my first playthrough of the new Australia simulation and it seems really great! Thanks so much for adding IRV to provide another electoral option and I hope that MMP will be coming in the future. This may be a really niche use case but for simulations like Australia where there are two parties acting as a governing coalition, could it be possible to allow for attack ads, scandals, etc. to be launched against the governing coalition instead of having to attack each party separately? Thanks for another great simulation!
Re switching between FPP and Instant-Runoff for the results, a workaround is to pause election night just before it finishes. You can then switch back and forth, while viewing basically the final results.
@BritishColumbiaBoy,
Thanks for this feedback – no plans to add MMP but it will probably happen at some point. Ya, the situation in Australia is tricky – the Coalition parties really act as one party for many purposes. I’ll think about this.
Thanks for thinking about that. I just played the simulation again and noticed that KAP and the Independents don’t get any votes, even under FPTP. Is this an issue with IRV or just a matter of them not running any candidates? Additionally, might there ever come a time when parties can make preference deals with each other so that parties will encourage their voters to rank another party second? Thanks for all the work you do!
“KAP and the Independents don’t get any votes, even under FPTP”
I’ll try to replicate this.
“when parties can make preference deals with each other so that parties will encourage their voters to rank another party second”
It’s a good idea, but no plans to do this at present. Maybe at some point in the future.
Mac version now released.
I think the problem with independents is that there are none in the 2019 campaign even where they are incumbent or the main challengers, such as Warringah and Wentworth. KAP and independents seem fine in 2016 though
You completely forgot One Nation for the 2019 campaign, which considering the impact their preferences could have is a pretty big oversight.
Oh, and also Clive Palmer’s new party.
@Lachlan re One Nation and Palmer’s party,
This shouldn’t affect preferences, since the %s are currently set up to give about the right post-Instant-Runoff %s. I plan to add both these parties, but left them out for initial release due to time constraints.
@Will,
These were left out initially due to time constraints. Prominent independents should be added with the next release.
@Anthony cold u make it that FPP stays please? Pausing it is an unnecessary annoyance. Plus it’s kinda misleading when FPP is an option on the drop down bar for final results.
@TheMiddlePolitical,
Yes, this is a glitch that will be fixed, but in the meantime, you can pause just before election night finishes if you want to view the different numbers.
@Anthony Oh okay,thank you!!! Great feature btw.
I had a question about the system in general.
Is the winner the person who has most most run off votes, or run off with 2c?
@TheMiddlePolitical
There’s no difference in seat count between Instant-Runoff and Instant-Runoff 2C. The 2C just reduces every constituency to the final 2 candidates, while normal Instant-Runoff only eliminates candidates if one doesn’t have > 50%.
